Z Score Table
Z Score Table Z-Score Table: In Statistics, we come across the word random variables very often. The term random variables is not like the variables we encounter in algebraic expressions. From a random experiment, the set of possible values obtained are known as the random variables. Random variables are the set of all the possible values and out of the set it can take any value randomly. For instance in an experiment of tossing a coin, there are 2 possibilities: getting heads or getting tails. Let us assume the value of 0 for heads and 1 for tails and have a random variable X. Then we see that the two random events are heads and tails. It is written as X = {0, 1}. Sample Space is the set of all the values of the random variable. These random variables can be discrete or continuous. The random variable in the normal equation is the normal random variable. The normal distribution function is given by the equation as shown below: Z-Score Definition: A z-score value is measurement in Statistics which indicates a given scores relationship to the mean. Out of several scores, the z-score indicates how many standard deviations a given particular score is from the mean. The z-score value is also known as the Standard score, z-values, and normal scores. Since the normal distribution is also known as the z distribution, hence we use the letter z for the score. Interpretation of the z-score: If the z-score is 0, then it implies that the score is the same as the mean. If the z-score is negative, then it implies that the score is lesser than the mean. If the z-score is positive, then it implies that the score is greater than the mean. If the z-score is 1, then it implies that the score is 1 standard deviation greater than the mean. If the z-score is -1, then it implies that the score is 1 standard deviation lesser than the mean. If the z-score is 2, then it implies that the score is 2 standard deviation greater than the mean. If the z-score is -2, then it implies that the score is 2 standard deviations lesser than the mean. Z-score formula: Given the mean and the standard deviation, we can calculate the z-score value from the formula shown below: Example: In an exam, a student receives a score of 88 when the mean of the class is 76 with a standard deviation of 10. How much is the z-score? Given the students score, x = 88 Mean, = 76 Standard deviation, = 10 From the z-score formula, we get the equation: z = (x )/ == z = (88 76)/ 10 z = 12/10 = 1.2 Therefore the z-score in this case = 1.2 With this z-score we can say that the student has scored above average (mean), with a distance of 1.2 from the average score. Mean: Mean is the average of the given scores. From a set of values, mean can be calculated by adding all the values and then dividing by the number of values in the set as shown in the figure below: Example: What is the mean of the values: 4, 7, 11, 10, 8? Given 5 values. Mean = Sum of the values/ Number of values So mean = (4+ 7+ 11+ 10+ 8)/ 5 = 40/5 = 8 Hence the mean of the given values is 8. Standard Deviation: The measure of finding how spread out or distributed the values are in a given set of values is the Standard Deviation. It is expressed using the Greek symbol (sigma). Standard Deviation can be easily calculated by finding the square root of the Variance. Normal Probability Distribution: Normal Probability Distribution, also known as the Bell Curve is a graph which depicts a standard normal distribution. The name Bell Curve is given because of its resemblance to a bell shape. Bell curves are extremely important and are very commonly used throughout the studies in Statistics. The two numbers that are necessary for plotting this Bell curve are the Mean and the Standard Deviation. The Bell curve (figure shown below) for a certain set of data always has the mean located at the center. This is the also the point where the curve reaches the highest point, known as the top of the bell. The Standard Deviation determines how much the given data set values are spread out. If the Standard deviation is larger, then the bell curve will be more spread out. A Bell curve is symmetric and hence when folded at the mean, we get 2 equal halves. As shown in the figures below, it is estimated that approximately 68% of all the given data lies within 1 standard deviation of the mean. And, about 95% is covered within 2 standard deviations of the mean, and about 99.7% is covered within 3 standard deviations of the mean. Negative Z-Score Table: The Negative Z-Score Table consists of all the negative z-scores. These negative z-scores are all to the left of the mean. Left of the mean is also considered as being below the mean. Positive Z-Score Table: The Positive Z-Score Table consists of all the positive z-scores which are to the right of the mean. These positive z-scores are to the right of the mean. They are also considered to be above the mean. Example: In the Science exam, the mean of the scores of the class is 80 with a standard deviation of 12. Jack scored 98 on the exam. What is the approximate percentage of students who scored lesser than Jacks score? Given the student Jacks score, x = 98 Mean, = 80 Standard deviation, = 12 From the z-score formula, we get the equation: z = (x )/ == z = (98 80)/ 12 z = 18/12 = 1.5 Therefore the z-score in this case = 1.5 Since the z-score is a positive number, we look at the Positive Z-Score table for the percent of students who scored within 1.5. As highlighted in the figure on the right, the value is 0.9332, which implies 93.32% of students scored lesser than Jack.

IEPs vs. 504 Plans How Do They Differ
IEPs vs. 504 Plans How Do They Differ When working toward the academic and socioemotional success of your student, its important to find appropriate support strategies. For students with learning differences, there are two in-school options that can provide the assistance your student may need: an IEP or a 504 plan. At their core, both IEPs and 504 plans exist to help students access academic accommodations. Each option is intended to protect and support students with learning differences and to allow them to thrive academically. However, IEPs and 504 plans differ in many ways, including the qualifications that must be met in order to utilize each and the implementation of both options. Keep reading to learn more about IEPs vs. 504 plans and how they differ. 1. The qualifications that a student must meet to apply for an IEP vs. a 504 plan When researching IEPs and 504 plans, you might quickly note the qualification differences between the two options. With 504 plans, students with a range of learning differences qualify, so long as the learning difference affects a major portion of their lifein this case, their schooling. 504 plans benefit students who can learn in their current academic environment (in other words, the classroom) given the addition of specific modifications. A child who is recovering from a serious illness or injury (such as a broken arm or diabetes) is one example of an individual who may benefit from a 504 plan. An IEP, in contrast, requires that students learning differences qualify under one of 13 categories. Having an IEP allows students to work with parents and school staff to create an in-depth accommodation plan detailing the required special education services to be utilized. Students must qualify in one of the following categories established by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (or IDEA): Autism Deaf-blindness Deafness Emotional disturbance Hearing impairment Intellectual disability Multiple disabilities Orthopedic impairment Other health impairments, such as ADHD Specific learning disability, such as dyscalculia, dysgraphia, or dyslexia Speech or language impairment Visual impairment, such as blindness Traumatic brain injury Its important to note that having one of these disabilities doesnt automatically qualify an individual for an IEP. In order to qualify, a students academic learning environment must be directly affected by the disability. Once you have a sense of whether your student qualifies for an IEP or a 504 plan, the next step is to work with a designated team through your school or school district to prepare a plan of action. [RELATED: 3 Benefits of Tutoring for Students With Learning Differences] 2. The benefits and implementation of IEPs vs. 504 plans Its impossible to say whether an IEP or a 504 plan is more beneficial, as both options provide a unique set of benefits to each individual student. Students with an IEP who require more intensive accommodationsincluding one-on-one time with individuals like reading specialistscan benefit from the special education resources available to them. These services vary by school and district, but they generally provide a higher level of individualized educational support. Students with a 504 plan are able to create a list of modifications to specific aspects of their schooling that are directly impacted by their disability. This option provides a great benefit to students who need accommodations to their educational experience, but who dont qualify for an IEP. A 504 plan gives those students who dont meet IEP qualifications an opportunity to still work with parents and school staff to find ways to promote academic success. Examples of 504 plan accommodations include modified physical education classes for students with asthma and peer note-takers for students with arm, hand, or wrist injuries. Both IEPs and 504 plans must be respected and implemented by the school and its staff. A 504 plan can be utilized on a temporary or continual basis, depending on the students level of need. IEPs serve as a detailed roadmap that school personnel use to provide special education services on a continual basis. Each option is typically reviewed and renewed annually, with changes made depending on the students current educational needs. This annual review is a great opportunity to note any ways in which your students plan could be improved in order to promote the best academic experience for him or her. The best option for your student depends on a variety of factors. Both IEPs and 504 plans have their own qualifications, positives, and negatives that will ultimately suit each student differently. Tips for Advocating For Your Own Career as an Introvert - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Tips for Advocating For Your Own Career as an Introvert - Introvert Whisperer Tips for Advocating For Your Own Career as an Introvert Do you find yourself staying quiet in team meetings? Or do you struggle defending yourself in performance reviews? Most introverts have issues facing confrontation or speaking up for themselves, so you arenât alone. Advocating for your skills and abilities, however, is a crucial part of advancing your career. Fortunately, introversion doesnât have to affect your ability to climb the career ladderâ" you can actually use it to your advantage! Here are some tips on how to champion yourself at work. Set up monthly check-ins Consider scheduling regular meet-ups with your supervisor or manager to discuss ways you can improve your work. Not only will this show your initiative and interest in advancement, but it will also serve as a great channel to share all the extra work youâve been doing. Plus, working one-on-one with your boss in a more casual setting should make it much easier for you to feel comfortable expressing your thoughts, rather than in a large group or in one pressure-filled meeting. Dress for success Many introverts are quiet in meetings with coworkers, which can (incorrectly) come across as having low self-confidence, a trait thatâs often associated with lack of leadership. Instead of fading into the background, use your appearance to boost your air of assuredness and best display your talents. Try to pick modern, professional outfits and tame your hair in order to be noticeable and look put-together. If you donât feel great about your options, consider splurging on a personal shopping experience for more flattering clothes, or one of many available hair loss treatments for healthier locks. This should help you join meetings looking and feeling confident in order to grab the attention of your coworkers without being over-the-top. Plan your networking accordingly Networking is a great opportunity to share your skills with others in the industry and make connections about possible job moves. However, most introverts feel drained after large social situations and need time to recoup. Keep this in mind when scheduling your networking events. Donât push yourself too far with back-to-back-to-back events. This will only leave you exhausted, burned-out, and likely unable to communicate effectively. Instead, plan on attending one every other week so you have more time to prepare and enter each event with a clear, productive mind. Use your strengths Some of the best characteristics of an introverted worker include the ability to work independently and engage in thoughtful communication. Use these to your advantage every day in the office. Whether that means taking on new projects yourself or sharing insights with coworkers that will advance the team. Additionally, as opposed to extroverts, introverts are more likely to use logic instead of haste when approaching career moves, which can be an asset when thinking long-term. Keep these strengths in mind when looking to further your position in the office and strengthen your career trajectory in general. In todayâs competitive job market, itâs important that youâre able to effectively showcase your skills, knowledge, and experienceâ" especially as an introvert. Utilize these tips to make sure youâre able to present your offerings well and take control of your career. Author Bio: Capri Fiello is a strong advocate for professional health and wellness. A Day in the Life at Baylor University
A Day in the Life at Baylor University The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teachtheyre sharing their college experiences as well. Cheyenne is a senior pre-med student at Baylor University. She currently tutors in Austin, Texas, specializing in science tutoring, SAT Math tutoring, and a number of other subjects. See what she had to share about her experience at Baylor University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Cheyenne: Campus setting here at Baylor University is very simple. The campus is around 1,000 acres in size, and getting around to classes has been very easy for me. I used a bike for the first couple of years, but now I simply walk to my classes. It takes me around 20 minutes to walk from where I live (about a block from campus) to my classes. Buildings are arranged so that relatively the same subjects are taught within them, and each area of campus is both like the others and unique in their own way. Not to mention that the entire setting is beautiful! There have been numerous renovations over my experience here, and even before them landscaping was kept to perfection. There is no shortage of nice, peaceful outdoor settings to study in or even just relax, including gardens and fountains. There are buses that run around the campus as well, for students that do not prefer to walk or bike to their classes which can be useful for students who struggle to find a parking spot in time an d walk to class from there (parking has been increasingly limited and difficult due to increasing class size). I do feel safe on campus as I walk to class daily, and there are plenty of open spaces and great lighting once the sun goes down. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at Baylor University? Cheyenne: Professors, academic advisors, and teaching assistants are all very available, either by appointment or during their office hours in which a student will have the opportunity to discuss challenging concepts or really anything else they need to with a professor. Office hours for some of the larger classes (and for science majors, these are usually the most important and challenging ones), may seem like a waste of time, as students literally flood the office of the professor not even five minutes after their office hours have begun. These larger classes, however, very commonly offer supplemental instruction. Supplemental instruction occurs at a time set different from the regular meeting time for that class, and is led by a current student chosen by the professor and who has made excellent scores in that class previously. This helps students prepare for tests and improve their overall grade in the class by helping to clarify concepts they struggle with, as well as look into what exactly the professors expectations are. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Cheyenne: Dorm life for me was a little challenging, as it is for most students entering college for their first year. Baylor requires that each student enrolling freshman year live in a dorm on campus, unless requirements are met in order to be allowed to live off-campus. Of course, some dorms are better than others; there are two basic Mens dorms and two basic Womens dorms, as well as multiple (and much nicer and cleaner) honors dorms or living-learning communities that students can apply to live in based on their interests (like the outdoor adventure community) or their field of study (like Earl hall for students with a health and science background). It should be noted that, although one may apply to be in one of the specialized living-learning communities, some of them do require living there for two years. Although dorm life and quality may vary, dining options most definitely do not they are all wonderful. There is always lots of variety in all of the dining halls, they are k ept clean, and those working there are always very kind. Socialization with other students in the dorms was very easy there are plenty of social events planned and there is always a large turnout of people for these events. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Cheyenne: Business and science majors are usually the most represented majors, however, I feel that Baylor has an excellent program in whichever major field of study a student chooses to pursue. I chose my major to be Health Science Studies, as this is the major that you should choose for a pre-professional track such as pre-med or pre-dent. When choosing a major to being with, however, I did feel pressured to choose this major, and was not informed that I could still have a focus on a pre-medical school plan while choosing another. Orientation was very busy and hectic and I did feel a bit lost in the crowd; however, after I began taking classes, there were many tools and tips offered to me by the university that I could use to succeed. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Cheyenne: It was very easy for me to make friends as a freshman, as there are so many social events and traditions to take part in that you can only experience as a freshman. Greek life does play a role in campus social life, and a lot of university traditions, such as homecoming and Pigskin (a Broadway-style competition that is open to all groups), are very much centered on Greek life and Greek organizations. I did not join a sorority, and there were many clubs and associations that were available to me that I made sure to be a part of based off of my interests in the scientific community. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services at Baylor University? Cheyenne: The career center is very helpful in that students have opportunities to explore different careers that would work with their major. You can walk in at any time or by appointment to explore options and discuss passions and pathways with a member of staff. Many reputable companies recruit on campus, and there are multiple job fairs every year to attend. Approaching the fall of my senior year, I have been emailed at least five times with employment opportunities for after graduation from organizations that are looking specifically for Baylor students. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Cheyenne: Libraries are great and spacious; however, the areas in which volume level is not controlled get crowded very easily during the evening, as a lot of students use these areas for more of a social study time than quiet study time. That being said, I have never failed to find a spot to work alone, as there are many available areas other than just the library to hit the books. All you need to do as a student is find what setting works for you and then figure the time of day when that setting usually occurs; as students tend to swarm study areas in waves based on the time of day. Describe the surrounding town. Cheyenne: There are plenty of places to go downtown for (of age) nightlife, and during the day students can visit the zoo, museums, go shopping, hiking in Cameron park, or even explore downtown choosing from artisan shops and places to eat. Students go outside of campus a lot for entertainment, although there are plenty of recreational activities on campus to enjoy such as the Bear Trail and, when the weather allows, a marina that are cheap for students to use and rent out things like paddleboards or kayaks in order to explore the Brazos river. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes at Baylor University? Cheyenne: The student body here is no more than 15,000 students. I was okay with my class size as a freshman, but looking now at incoming classes, it seems they are increasing in size. Last year I remember hearing that there were more students admitted than there was room for housing on campus. Housing was eventually provided for these students; however, I feel that increasing incoming class size can eventually have a negative impact on the quality of educational experience. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Cheyenne: My best experiences were in small classes. Even though I am science major, my most memorable class experience would be during a required American Literature class I took my sophomore year. There were maybe twenty students in the class at the most, and even though there was structure in reading and writing assignments, it mainly focused on time and getting things done on time, leaving the assignment to be truly making some assertions about the material. My professor led the class as a discussion over what we read in preparation, and made sure to give historical context to everything we experienced. I feel that with this style of teaching I was really able to dive into the material, even though I am more of a scientific mind. I found the true value of literature as it relates to my own life and took with me after the conclusion of that class the ability to apply works of literature to the world around me, as well as examine it for assertions and observations about life as a h uman being. The Best Places in the US for Landscape Photography.
The Best Places in the US for Landscape Photography. The USAâs Most Amazing Landscapes for Photographers. ChaptersWhat is Landscape Photography? What Makes Good Landscape Photography?Grab Your Digital Camera: Americaâs Most Amazing Landscapes. The United States of America is huge. One of the top five biggest countries by land area in the world, in fact. Itâs so big, actually, that itâs almost as big as all of Europe put together.Given this, the country boasts an awful lot of varied landscapes, views, and terrains. Again, it pretty much has all the different geographical landforms that you could imagine â" from mountains to lakes, deserts to glaciers, dense forest to dry plateaus. Plus, a selection of the weirdest craters, canyons, and rock formations known to man.All of this makes the country an incredible place for landscape photography. Because the variety of the landscapes of America is what makes the country unique. Yes, Russia and Canada are bigger â" and almost universally beautiful â" but you know that youâre getting snow, mountains, lakes, and then some more. And so, for the landscape photographer, the USA is the perfect place. It has incredibly beautiful landscapes, yes, but it will also test your photography skills. Yes, youâll take some spectacular landscape pictures â" but then you have the opportunity to engage with a completely different beautiful landscape. So, letâs take a look at what some of the best subjects would be for your photographic explorations. Otherworldly places, spectacular views, a mountain range at sunset.Landscape photography is all of these things, for sure. But it is a whole lot of other things too. Think nature photography, street photography, a cityscape or seascape. Think about night photography or photos of the urban landscape. Think travel photography. All of these types of photography â" and many more â" can come under the notion of landscape photography, a field which is so broad that might not even be that useful as a term.Because landscapes are the most varied things around. And even if they have a human element, if they overlap somewhat with great photos from wildlife photography, if they are not even immediately pictures of landscapes, landscap e will still make up much of the compositional element of the image.Check out the best places for landscape photography in South America. Landscapes can have people on too. What is a Landscape?A more pertinent question here would be, what precisely is a landscape? And, interestingly enough, this is one of the most long-explored questions in the history of art.Landscape is not actually that thing that we immediately think of it as. The word âlandscapeâ conjures up images of a pure, unblemished nature â" like a wilderness, with little man-made dimension.Yet, these notions of authenticity and purity are a bit dishonest. Because whilst landscape photography is not so posed as, say, portrait photography, it is not completely detached from the human.Landscape comes from the two words, land and scape, the latter meaning to shape. Before this word was used for paintings and photos, it was used to refer to the process by which land was shaped or cultivated, or made useful, by humans. In this respect, landscape, historically speaking, always plays out through the interaction of human and ânatureâ â" something which, outs ide of studio photography, pretty much always happens.Find the best spots for landscape photography in Asia. What Makes Good Landscape Photography? But landscape photography does not even rely on the presence of beautiful scenery that can be photographed. Some of the most beautiful images are of some of the most banal things.Rather, what makes landscape photographs good is much more about the work of the landscape photographers themselves than the landscape they photograph. For a photograph to be appealing and interesting, the photograph needs to take precedence over the thing represented.A professional photographer has a million and one photography techniques to make this happen. The shutter speed, the depth of field, the white balance, the width of angle and the length of exposure â" and the natural light. All of this camera gear, and the subsequent photo editing software, contributes to make amazing photos.Finding an interesting landscape or an inspiring landscape is only half the battle of taking photos. The rest comes with knowing how to shoot.Grab Your Digital Camera: Americaâs Most Amazing Landscapes. As we said above, the beauty of the United States is in its infinite variety of landforms, landscapes, and sceneries. From endless plains to snow-covered peaks, from gorgeous coastlines to arid deserts, the range of geographical features is astounding.Weâve put together some of the best here â" yet, âbestâ, necessarily, is a relative term.Ultimately, if you want to be a landscape photographer, youâll have to leave behind the crowds and follow your eye. This is what makes photographers great: an ability to see the things others miss, a commitment to beauty and strangeness in all their visual forms. So, best of luck! We hope you find this a good starting point.New Hampshireâs White Mountains.New England is famous probably for one thing more than anything else â" amongst travellers at least. That thing is its trees in autumn â" which, amongst regi onal symbols, is one of the loveliest around.Considering that New England is essentially just forests, the changing of the leaves during fall is all-encompassing â" and literally unmissable.Yet, if you are a budding landscape photographer interested in colour, light, and shade, there is no better place to hone your skills.Try New Hampshireâs White Mountains â" one of the most famous places for autumn colours. The Kancamagus Highway is perhaps the most spectacular. Practice your photography skills on the colours of autumnal New England.Alaskaâs Kenai Fjords. As Europeans flock to Norway to see the fjords, Americans head to Alaska. Quite simply, this might be one of the most beautiful places in the world, with glaciers, icy lakes, and snow-covered mountains.Itâs not only that though. You should as much for the array of curious wildlife as much as for the scenery.Obviously, itâs cold as hell. But thatâs a good thing if you are wanting your wilderness pics: thatâs the only reason there are so few people. Remember to take some gloves and be prepared to do a bit of hiking. The Palouse, Washington. Now, of all the wonderful things that Washington state offers, the Palouse might be the most magical, dreamy, and unexpected. This isnât spectacular peaks or jaw-dropping cliffs. Rather, the Palouse homes a range of hills, gently rolling and grass-covered. This might sound like the most boring of English landscapes, yet, honestly, the effect is qui te different. These rippling shapes seem to shimmer in the light, resembling more the crumpled surface of an ocean. For pure serene beauty â" and a totally unique landscape â" this is the place to come. The Colorado River â" in Arizona. The Colorado River is a sight to behold â" and to snap â" at any point of its fifteen hundred mile length. Yet, perhaps, it is at its most famous â" and most beautiful â" as it passes through Arizona.Horseshoe Bend, a dramatic meander in the Colorado, may now be the most photographed river scene ever. However, there is much more to this river than this.Check out parts of the San Juan River â" one of the Coloradoâs tributaries â" for one of Americaâs most dramatic landscapes. These hills in the Palouse are just gorgeous.Antelope Valley, California.California is a beautiful state.
